Hoodoo Stands Alone: It's Not Wicca, and It's Not "Just Another Path"

"Is hoodoo a type of witchcraft?" It's one of the most common questions, and the honest answer is more complicated than yes or no.

"Is hoodoo a type of witchcraft?" It's one of the most common questions, and the honest answer is more complicated than yes or no.

Hoodoo is its own tradition. It formed in a specific place, among specific people, under specific pressures. It has its own cosmology, its own working methods, its own relationship to ancestors and to God, and its own ethics.

Wicca, by contrast, is a modern religion with its own structure: a wheel of the year, a rule of three, and a framework most hoodoo practitioners never used. Many people practice hoodoo without ever calling themselves witches, and many are Christian, which is part of the tradition's history, not a contradiction.

When hoodoo gets folded into broad "witchy" categories, a few things happen. Its Black American roots get blurred. Its Christian and ancestral elements get treated as optional. And people start mixing frameworks that were never designed to fit together.

None of this means others can't learn or respect it. It means we call it what it is: a standalone tradition that deserves to be understood on its own terms, not as a flavor of something else.

A tradition that survived this long doesn't need to be absorbed to be valid.
